Video Game Reviews of Brave Story: New Traveler

Customer Review: Quite Excellant!
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this game for about a week and played about 15 hrs worth. Here are some initial thoughts:

PROS:

+Hilarious dialogue and very charming characters. Since you'll be spending your whole game with these characters, humor and personality is a must.

+Quick battles and I love the extra attack feature that happens from time to time to speed up battles

+Gorgeous game, top-notch cut scenes and beautiful scenery and towns

+Quick learning curve. I've mainly played only Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts RPGS but Brave Story is easy to learn and dive into

+Gives you the option of listening to either the JAPANESE OR ENGLISH voices in battle mode, no other game i've played so far offers this feature, too bad it doesn't give you that option for the cut-scenes too.

+ALMOST NO LAGTIMES AT ALL. Seriously.

+Those of you who have watched the anime movie will be pleasantly surprised to know that some main characters make an appearance and actually join your party for a short time!!!

+This game is currently under $20, pretty cheap considering the quality.

+Decent music, it's not mindblowing but it's pleasant and easy to listen to.

+Besides the main quest, you can also do sidequests like helping the villagers in return for useful items There's also birdcatching and birdbrawling (aka cockfighting) which is pretty addictive, i just wish there were more characters in the game you could birdbrawl with.

CONS:

-The Maps: THERE ARE NO MAPS FOR DUNGEONS OR FORESTS. This is a huge problem for me because there are easily dozens of paths in these areas and i'm constantly getting lost or retracing my steps because I can't use the map feature.

-The English voices are VERY annoying, just grit your teeth and bear with it though.

-A lot or random enemy encounters, when you're trying to get somewhere specific this becomes very annoying.

-It's not an amazingly new or innovative addition to the RPG genre. Basically the same save the girl story.

-Slow text, there's a lot of text dialogue and I wish there was a skip feature for dialogue I've already read through.

-The main character is as boring as a rock, there are times in the game when you're given an option for saying either the expected thing or something wildly humorous, but this doesn't happen enough. Thankfully, the side characters are there to make up for it.

Final thoughts:
For an RPG it does almost everything right. And at it's current price, this game is a catch. I'd recommend this game for experienced gamers who want to play something solid and casual gamers who are new to the genre. I'm not sure why it's $70 on Amazon, but just buy it from the other vendors.

Customer Review: Brave Story was exceptionally good.
Summary: 5 Stars

I just completely finished this game, well except creating all the crafts which I will do, and I enjoyed it. I have the book so once I saw that they came out with the game I had to get it. The gameplay is fun and as with any RPG it does get repetitive during random encounters but this game has a ton of sidequest that made it more enjoyable to play. This game isn't that challenging but it does have it moments, ie the final two optional bosses.

Customer Review: Another tiresome game just like Avalon Code
Summary: 1 Stars

It seems to me that I can't stand these kind of games. I had so many problems with Avalon Code due to these stupid bosses who can't seem to die quick enough and now Brave story is no exception. The thing that pisses me off is that it is not fair to have all 3 bosses
attack me before I could even get a chance to attack. And it also not fair they take so much of my HP in one swoop. I hate this game.
I wasted my money.

Customer Review: Better than I expected!
Summary: 4 Stars

It's a great game! The story is a bit simple, but it's entertaining. The characters are all likable except the main character, who is silent, a pet peeve of mine. But other than that, it was good fun all the way through. There's a lot of text, rather than voice acting, which could put off some people, but everything else is sound. There's some nice usage of soft filtering on the characters that really make the graphics look nice. The combat system is a little different, offering combination attacks among members of your party, and your mana refills as you attack. If you're into turn based RPGs, you'll enjoy this one. It plays it safe as far as innovation goes, but it's still a great game.

I don't remember any loading times, so they must have been short, and I didn't encounter any technical problems whatsoever. No worries there.

Recommended!

Customer Review: About as generic as they come.
Summary: 3 Stars

When I first heard of Brave Story: New Traveler, I was expecting something fun and entertaining for the PSP, an RPG that was ORIGINAL! Luckily I soon found it used but in great condition and took it for a spin. Everything started off a little awkward, expecting starved PSP owners to buy into a typical shonen manga plot to carry us an entire game, but it seems SO generic that maybe it's all a trap, right? Maybe the characters will be deeper than 2D cutouts from any JRPG promo poster, right? Turn based battles too? Maybe we'll be offered some very deep character customization and development, Right???

Unfortunately, the answers to all of these is a resounding no. The story is mind numbingly generic, failing to ever capture your heart or attention, and the same can be said of the characters as well, whom never seem more deep and interesting than a ham sandwich. The battles are a deadly combination of being both simple and easy, coupled with the standard grinding of any rpg and the game just about kills itself. The art style may as well be nonexistent, as everyone you encounter looks like they're making a cameo from one of a thousand other games you never cared for, and the environments are as dull to look at as they are to traverse.

Sadly, the game does seem to have had quite a bit of work put into it. The graphics, though lacking in style, are well more than serviceable and the battle animations are smooth and even charming, like in the case of Yuno's constantly twitching ears. The voice acting is good enough to avoid complaints, and load times are kept to a minimum. The team behind this game could have had a gem, but instead they chucked ingenuity out the window and stuck with what they and everyone around them knew would work and nothing else.

I sincerely wish RPG loving PSP owners would stop lavishing praise on the game and just admit that the system has little to offer in the way of GOOD original RPGs. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to play Etrian Odyssey 2 while waiting for Monster Hunter United.
