Video Game Reviews of Silent Hill OriginsCustomer Review: Silent Hill game Summary: 5 StarsThis was purchased as a gift, so I can't rate the game, but I was satisfied with the product in general. It was just as ordered, shipped quickly with no problems, I would order from this seller again.
Customer Review: GREAT!!! Summary: 5 StarsPSP has the best games and this one proves it. Scare the hell out of you tension, great graphics, good controls and great story line.
Customer Review: Excellent Game Summary: 5 StarsI remember playing the original SH on PS1 and I still own it. I rank it among the top 5 PS1 games I've ever played. Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, MGS, Tomb Raider being the other 4. As you can see I am a fan of SH thus this review may be a little subjective. Nonetheless, I will try to stay honest and objective.
First, I am glad that Konami developed this game exclusively for the PSP and we are not getting a port. Loading times are short and the gameplay and the cinematics blend seamlessly. Plot is what you expect it to be if you've played any of the SH games before and of course alternate endings.
They paid a lot of attention to detail and the graphics look awesome, feels like a PS2 game. The music is still very good and the controls are great which is a lot to say when it comes to games for the PSP. Our hero can fight with his fists and almost anything he can pick up in the environment can be used as a weapon which is more realistic but takes away from that eerie feeling when you knew you were running out of amno and all you had left was that sorry pipe to defend yourself.
Also, I have been around since the Atari era (yes, I am old) so I am not a hard core gamer anymore I consider myself more of a casual gamer. The game is not too long and not too hard, if you need help with some of the puzzles you can always look them up in any online walkthrough.
If you played SH before you won't be dissapointed and if you haven't give it a try you may become a fan. Remember this is how it all started....
Update: I still like the game but my biggest gripe would be the camera, I think the developer was trying to create an atmosphere of suspense/fear by not letting you become fully aware of your surroundings but this can be very frustating. Some of the boss battles are cheap because of this, and sometimes you would a needlessly die - frustrating!! Now that being said, this doesn't make the game unplayable, to me it's just a minor gripe. In many instances you can positioned the camera behind your shoulder so the camera issue is not throughout the game.
Customer Review: If you haven't played Silent Hill before don't let this be your first... Summary: 4 StarsI can't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't overly pleased. Silent Hill is a very fun survival/horror game series, and if you haven't played it before don't start with this one (start with Silent Hill 2, or 3 for the PS2). It almost seemed as though Konami was just fishing for money with this one.
I felt the game was lacking in originality, it seemed the plot was a rip off of the movie they made about a year back... going so far as to have the characters in the game mirror the actors in the movie. Even the monsters were ripped from the movie, and they just repeat the same ones (for the most part) throughout. However, the back story of the main character (Travis Grady) was original, and well written. They also replaced Pyramid Head with some guy called The Butcher (ugh...).
Another thing lacking in this game: it wasn't scary. I followed the "instructions" (lights off, earphones on), just didn't do it for me. It was because the game was too easy, it wasn't really a "survival". All of the monsters can be easily run past, or killed with your fists, and supplies are so abundant that you never really have to worry about your health. The horror genre usually needs to be paired with survival for it to work. The cheap thrills only go so far, and if your character doesn't have any chance of dying the game isn't going to do much. Even the "mirror world" doesn't hold much water (it's only saving grace being Akira Yamaoka, and he did one hell of a job with this soundtrack). Part of what made the "darker worlds" in the SH series scary was that you worked your way up (the worlds getting more disturbing the further you progressed). In this one you just flip back between the mirror world, and the normal world, and I felt it detracted from the scare factor.
You'll beat the game in under 5 hours, which is pretty good timing, considering that's about the time the lack of diversity and originality in the game will start to bore you.
PROS:
Akira Yamaoka's soundtrack.
Travis Grady's backgroud story.
CONS:
Lack of originallity/diversity.
Gameplay is too easy.
Who the H*** is The Butcher?
Even with its flaws this is still my favorite game that has come out for the PSP. If you're a fan you're going to like it. If you haven't played before, start elsewhere and then come play this one.
