Customer Review: A generally traditional Silent Hill entry with some unique elements

Silent Hill fans should by now have adapted to the fact that there are now various chefs cooking up new titles for the franchise. The first title to show the benefits of this diversity was Silent Hill Origins. Molded in general gameplay style around the traditional 3rd-person survival-horror adventure format, it also introduced some changes to the formula.
Firstly, the game manages to carry over the expected visual sophistication of the series to the PSP system. Only the less exquisitely detailed faces of in-game characters indicate a change in design priorities for the new title.
The game also controls very well in the classic Silent Hill mold of exploration interspersed with deliberately paced moments of combat. Origins adds in a near-universal system of weapon durability (the unique Silent Hill 4 introduced specific weapons that could break), as well as a great host of items about the environment to repurpose as weapons or even to throw at enemies. Not all is perfect here, however, as the attempted balance between breakable weapons and new weapon availability breaks down as one's inventory overflows with dozens of sticks, bars, and even multiple small TVs. Durability becomes less of an issue, replaced by awkward inventory management.
Another change is to the replayability and ranking systems of the game. Replacing the "10-star" ranking of older SH titles is a new set of challenges to meet (similar to Xbox 360 achievements). Each one in turn rewards a significant new unlockable, including weapons and several optional costumes for main character Travis.
Which brings us to the all-important "fun factor". Silent Hill Origins is not only a competent SH entry built natively around the PSP, but is also surprising fun to replay. After a challenging first playthrough, subsequent plays can be accomplished quite quickly and the unlockable weapons and different endings are worth the trouble to earn.
