Video Game Reviews of Madden NFL 07

Customer Review: Madden NFL 07 PSP
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this game for my grandson. He also received 6 other games for Christmas but he plays this game most of the time. He loves this game. He has all the Madden games over the past years. Every time a new one comes out, he gets it.

Customer Review: Bugs. It's in the game. And the game is to sell more games... Want to play?
Summary: 4 Stars

You can't have your cake and eat it too? Evidently not, in Madden NFL 2007 for the PSP, if you carry the analogy to offensive audibles.

Overall, this game is great. They got everything right. Except for the execution. The final product. It just isn't finished, and they don't think the problems are significant enough to fix. I disagree.

Most people who give the game 5 stars love it, and I love it too. I mean the graphics are dazzling, even on the PSP. I have been exiled from console games (well, the wife and I agree console game systems are annoying to watch on the living room TV if you aren't playing them) so I can't really compare them to the current console versions, but I know the console games must look spectactular when the PSP version looks so great. The players look right out of real life right down to the gloss on the helmets and the ripped up turf on the field. Gameplay is typical Madden, going way back, with extra customization as to player control. The offering of offensive and defensive plays are easier to find with grouping by overall formation, and then by subset (like 4-3, 4-3 over, and 4-3 under all accessible by horizontal key, while switching to nickel or special teams is accessible by vertical keys) and your formation stays put from one down to the next (an advantage over NCAA 2007) unless you get to fourth down, where special teams is automatically selected (a pain if you like to go for it on fourth down).

If comparisons to NCAA 2007 are any help (I rated it 5 stars cause they fixed their errors) the NCAA 2007 playbook SEEMS to have more plays than Madden 07, although the quality of plays in Madden has the edge. The defense SEEMS more flexible in NCAA 07 as well, as switching from 4-3 to 3-4 defense is something that can be done with most any defensive playbook, but this is certainly not too limiting, as Madden's defensive plays are better as well.

Really, comparing the two games playbooks falls short of good analysis, because each of these two games have plays that are used on the field in the NFL and the NCAA. They are different levels of play. The Madden playbook is easier to navigate, and has the advantage of sticking with the formation of your last play, so overall it is the winner.

The problems are simple. The most glaring error which affects gameplay is the "offensive audible" bug. It seems to work against you and the computer, so you could call it a null thing. The problem is that the player has the advantage of being able to not call an audible, or calling a time out to get out of it. The computer has a tendency to call an audible if you show blitz, which is great, because you can back them up another five yards (delay of game) when they call an audible that picks up the glitch.

Not EVERY offensive audible picks up the glitch, which is the only thing that makes the game playable. I mean, you could turn off penalties, but I like penalties, because they are part of the game. I don't like too many on my team of course, but they are needed for realism. I don't think you can turn off the audibles, but I don't want to, because it is an element to gameplay which really helps with effective strategy, even if the bugs pops up every so often. But when it happens, especially when you have to watch the clock tick down when it "bugs" the other teams offensive audible, it stinks.

The "madden defensive lineman ball batting commentary" bug is uber annoying as well. Just after you have made a big touchdown, part of the fun is the positive commentary afterwards. Running with the sprint button mashed down causes Madden to spout out one of his three or four recorded lines about defensive linemen getting a hand in there and batting down a ball. Which totally spoils your difficult rushing touchdown by breaking you out of the realism which the commentary is supposed to create! I mean, why do you need commentary anyway? You are running the play yourself. The stats show up on the screen. You know who did what to whom and why.

The commentary makes it like a pro game on television which you happen to be controlling yourself.

When Madden spaces out and says something wacky about a batted down ball when you ran into the endzone, they ought to at least have Al Michaels say something like "I don't know what game you are watching John, but I thought that was a great rushing touchdown."

I am simply mad that instead of fixing the 2 major problems, they just left them in there and said, "Hey, no biggie. We can't get EVERYTHING working on this game, but it is still a great game." Really what they are saying is that they can't miss the deadline, and miss out on all those big bucks worth of sales. They can't miss out on selling a game where you have to pay Madden himself and the NFL for all the licensing rights... but we just have to put up with a game that isn't finished. It isn't fair. EA wins, Madden wins, but the consumer loses.

"Ball on the 2 yard line. Tensions are high. The defense is showing blitz. Plenty of time left on the playclock with less than 30 seconds to go in the game...the QB is shouting out an audible at the line of scrimage...they are shifting the formation...the offense is trying to come back from a 6 point deficit... they have time to get off one more play...they are out of time outs...play clock down to 15 seconds now...10 seconds remain...5 seconds...they better snap this...they didn't snap the ball! They had plenty of time, but they just didn't snap the ball!"

How's that for frustration?

Ea wins. Madden wins. We lose.

Customer Review: WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Graphic's are great the big hit's the only complaint I have is you can't challenge a play but usually the play's are close enough for a great call. mini game is great and the new end to end.

Customer Review: Glitches Vs. Fun
Summary: 4 Stars

It's got a lot of small glitches, but only one or two affect the game play, not enough to make a difference though. All in all, it's a great game. It's Madden and he's got almost a decade of great games. This one has more glitches in it than any other Madden game to date, for instance... If you run in for a TD, he will say, "The lineman got his hands up and batted that pass down". That's how most of the glitches are. They don't really make a difference. If you're looking for portable football, this is the way to go.

Customer Review: Great Game for the PSP
Summary: 5 Stars

I got Madden 07 last week and I can't stop playing it. In Respone to the First Reviewer, you can cancel out of a audible by pressing Triangle. The Mini Camp games are a great way to waste time. The END 2 END game is great, and also you can play it without getting bored. The best part is the fact that there is Infrastructure mode, which allows you to Play anybody around the world. The only problem with Infrastructure mode is that the connection gets lost alot and most kids end their connection when they start to lose. This makes it hard to get a good ranking, because a lost connection counts as a lose or the game doesn't count. Good game all around
